Name days

In the Czech Republic, every day of the year is a “name day.” All the calendars I’ve seen around town not only include Czech holidays but also one or two names. I’ve heard that a person’s name day is celebrated as much as his or her birthday. On your name day, gifts are given; parties are thrown. A nice little tradition. Do you have a Czech name day? Have a look. Some surprising names on the calendar:

Alan – August 14

Norbert – June 6

Richard – April 3

Robert – April 29

Robin – January 30

Roland – June 14

Tamara – June 3

This article has some interesting information about the history of name days in Europe and where the names come from if you’re interested in learning more.
